The controversy of GamerGate (often referred to as #GamerGate, a massively used hashtag on Twitter when the controversy was raging) refers to a series of polemics that began in August 2014. Journalists who denounced the sexism of the gamer culture were violently attacked by the adherents of #GamerGate who viewed this as being partial. Women, and above all journalists, subsequently became the targets of violence and an online hate-storm.
