“We are currently in a period of transition in media history. Millions of people on the Internet produce, alter and distribute memes, digital content with stereotyped motifs. This “culture” offers a new frontier and a rich and complex area of study. For the first time, we can study with precision a phenomenon that is both global and local, popular and, in a way, elitist, one that is constructed, “mediated,” and structured by technology. Studying memes does not only enable us to understand what is and perhaps what might be digital culture, but also to invent a new approach that will enable us to grasp the complexity of the circulation of leitmotifs on a global scale.”
